Bruce Burrell was born to serve others. From a young age, he came from a military family. He joined the U.S. Navy right after high school. For 28 years in the Navy, he showed true dedication. He earned many medals and awards. He stayed calm in tough situations and made wise choices. This led him to emergency management roles later.

After an honorable discharge, Burrell kept serving the public. He worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs in IT. He used his skills to help fellow veterans and their families.

But Burrell’s true passion was emergency response. In 2005, Calgary hired him as Fire Chief. He held this position until retiring in 2014. During this time, his leadership really shined. He guided Calgary through the devastating 2013 floods.

Burrell was deeply committed to public safety. He was fully dedicated to his duties. His early life and career created a legacy of selfless service. He inspired many with his example.

II. Details of the Bruce Burrell Obituary


In 2017, Bruce got bad news. He had a lung disease called pulmonary fibrosis. It scars the lungs and gets worse over time. Bruce didn’t give up though. He kept being brave like he always was.

As Bruce’s disease got really bad, he needed a lung transplant to live. He got the transplant in 2021. He hoped it would help him get better.

Sadly, Bruce had complications from the transplant surgery. It became a very hard fight for his life. His wife Jennifer wrote updates online about his tough battle. She said “He fought death until the end. He had the strongest will to live I’ve ever seen.”

In the end, Bruce passed away on March 18, 2024 at age 65 after his long struggle.

To honor Bruce’s amazing life, there will be memorial services. People can visit on Tuesday, November 14, 2023 from 4-8pm at the Modell Funeral Home. Another visit time is Wednesday, November 15 from 8:30-9:30am at the same place.

The funeral mass is Wednesday, November 15 at 10am at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church.
